I practice in Pennsylvania, so my patients and I get to enjoy all four beautiful seasons together. With the changing weather, the plants and animals are also affected, resulting in many of us experiencing varying levels of allergic rhinitis throughout the year. Usually, I team up with my trusted allergist to tackle these concerns. Sometimes medications are needed, but most of the time, we start with simple steps like keeping up a good nasal hygiene routine. Establishing proper nose blowing and using daily saline spray can make a world of difference but what if there is a new solution just starting to be discovered?
As airway dentistry continues to improve and grow, we find more and more products being developed to support our functional goals. The SONU band by SoundHealth is one of these products. I first heard about the SONU Band last year, and I have to admit, I was immediately skeptical. But ever since it received FDA approval this summer, it's been gaining a lot of attention and momentum.
In its simplest form, the SONU band is a headband; A very high-tech headband. The headband is meant to be worn across the forehead twice daily for 15-minute sessions. It's designed to be comfortable and has an athletic appearance. Customers have reported immediately congestion relief that continues to improve with continued use. You will know when it is working because, “you'll hear melodic tones and feel gentle vibrations from the band” (Learn About SONU – AI-Driven, FDA-Approved Nasal Relief Essentials, n.d.).

You are probably thinking the same thing I am at this point.
It sounds pretty simple, but how does it clear congestion?
SoundHealth's SONU Band utilizes sound waves to reduce nasal swelling and clear mucus, while also working to enhance airflow and improve breathing. To demonstrate how sound waves can effectively clear congestion, SoundHealth released the demonstration video below.
Finding the effective soundwaves is unique for each individual. SoundHealth customizes each costumers sound waves using a complimentary app, the SONU app. It is completely free to use. You can download the app today and start playing; however, there is not much available if you do not have the SONU Band. To start your customized experience, the app will perform facial scans and voice scans. Using these scans, along with AI technology, the app is able to derive a CBCT-grade model of your airway and customize your treatment. As you continue treatment, you can continuously monitor your airway health, even sharing information with your healthcare providers.
I have been extremely skeptical of this product since it first came on my radar. However, I cannot deny that they are gaining notoriety and the research is promising. The most recent study at the time of this article was published in July 2023. In this randomized controlled trial Acoustic resonance therapy showed to be extremely effective in reducing moderate to severe nasal congestion (Luong et al., 2023).

As our year is coming to an end, TIME magazine has recognized the SONU Band as one of the top inventions of 2025, Further solidifying technologies place in airway dentistry. I have not personally experienced the SONU band; however, given its price point of, $299, my healthy skepticism will continue. While this product, at this time, may not be suitable for my own personal use, I will keep it in mind as an effective alternative to daily medication for others.
