Every myofunctional therapist has four key goals when treating a patient. The first, and arguably the most crucial, is promoting nasal breathing. Why is nasal breathing important, and why is it worth the time to address?
Nasal breathing warms, humidifies and purifies air as it enters the lungs.
Nose breathing removes dust mites from the body in 15 minutes
Mouth breathing removes them in 60-120 days
Children that primarily breathe through their nose achieve better facial development as well as great brain development.
Nasal breathing regulates oxygen and carbon dioxide absorption in the body.
You get 18% more oxygen to the brain with nasal breathing and receive regenerative sleep if achieved at night.
Signs of Mouth Breathing
Signs of excessive saliva, drooling
open mouth posture
Waking up with a dry throat or mouth
Dry, cracked lips, addiction to chap stick
Snoring
Chewing with your mouth open
